Education Related
Docents or Tour Guides
Docent volunteers have the rewarding job of learning about art history, the Museum's permanent collection, and guiding groups from bus tours and schools of up to twenty people to small clubs and community groups. They also serve as school and club outreach presenters.
Special activities: the education department also uses volunteers on our special "family day" events as well as for summer art camp.

Collection Related
The curatorial department, especially the registrar's office, often uses interns and volunteers for entering information into the collections database; assisting in packing objects and housekeeping related to objects; working in the library to update and maintain the art books; and clerical efforts such as typing loan forms and answering research questions as well as maintenance of artist's files and handling requests for information.
Marketing: conducting marketing surveys is an important tool, which we use to gather information from our visitors, members, and tour groups. We need volunteers to help gather this information, and in some cases, to work with the Marketing Director to compile it into a database.

Women's Committee: this group has over 70 members and is a very active social group, which serve as ambassadors to the community and raises funds on behalf of the Museum through special events. The Women's Committee helpa to host and plan exhibition preview receptions, support educational events, and so much more. Their signature events are Art in Bloom, which takes place in May, and the Art in the Kitchen Tasting Tour scheduled for October.
Museum Shop: volunteers sign up for specific shifts to work as clerks in the Shop. Since the Shop must be staffed during all hours the Museum is open (35 hours a week), there is always a need for people here. Volunteers are also used to help with annual inventory and merchandising and housekeeping needs.
Special Events: if you don't have time to make a larger commitment of time, working on a Museum event might meet your needs better. These include program-related events listed above, and free events to which we invite the community, such as Arts Alive! (part of National Arts and Humanities Month) in October.
Westmoreland Jazz Society: this membership group develops a season of 10 concerts, which occur the third Thursday of the month at the Museum. They are interested in providing educational opportunities for children and adults about this American Art form.

General Office
All the departments of the Museum have needs at different times relating to entering information into the computer, filing, folding flyers, and stuffing envelopes. These may not be glamorous, but they are greatly appreciated by staff. In addition, we also work with volunteers who are interested in bringing their professional area of expertise to the Museum for projects that may include work with accounting, human resources and computer-related work.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call 724/837-1500 ext. 33 or email info@wmuseumaa.org and we will contact you according to your areas of interest.
