Thursday January 01, 2009 - 12/31/2009 Museum Celebration
50 years into the vision
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art was established as the Woods Marchand Foundation in 1949 at the bequest of Mary Marchand Woods, a resident of Greensburg interested in the arts but without a personal collection. This visionary founder bequeathed her entire estate in order for the Museum facility to be built in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, 35 miles east of Pittsburgh, where it was positioned to serve the people of rural Westmoreland County as well as the city of Pittsburgh. In 1959, the Museum opened its doors to the public and its focus became the collection and exhibition of American and southwestern Pennsylvania art.
Please celebrate 50 years into the vision with The Westmoreland through a myriad of activities throughout 2009, as we acknowledge the past and look forward to the future.
The Westmoreland's Fiftieth Anniversary celebration is supported by Allegheny Energy, Eden Hall Foundation, Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation and Richard M. Scaife.
Other Fiftieth Sponsors include:
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield
Latrobe Specialty Steel Company
Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation

Support for the arts is at risk. Write your legislators today and let them know that you support funding for the arts.
State investment in the arts has been stripped to zero from the senate's budget. The loss of this funding would hurt all the arts community, including The Westmoreland, during these challenging times. Let your voice be heard. Contact your legislators through Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania.

A Personal Journey
Regional artist Daniel Bolick has partnered with The Innocence Project, a nationwide effort to exonerate wrongly convicted men and women, to give a face to the injustice sometimes served by our imperfect judicial system. In an expressive style matched only by the dramatic personal journeys of his subjects, Daniel brings to life the stories of ten men whose lives were destroyed and are now restored after spending years in prison for crimes they did not commit. Join the artist as he describes his own personal journey to create these larger than life portraits.
Daniel Bolick is The Westmoreland Museum of American Art's Exhibition Award winner from the 2007 Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Annual Exhibition. With a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Kent State University, he has taught art for thirty-four years in the Pittsburgh Public School System. He has received numerous awards in regional exhibitions and was selected for inclusion in The Westmoreland's 2008 Juried Biennial Exhibition.

Thursday August 06, 2009 Thursday Evenings at The Westmoreland
Abstract Art Comes of Age
The Westmoreland's Curator Barbara Jones will lead a gallery tour of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's traveling exhibition: Modern Masters. In the decades following World War II, artists blended knowledge of the old masters and modernists with philosophy and mythology to create artwork that addressed social concerns and personal history. Join Barbara as she describes the rise of abstract expressionism as a national style in America, as New Your surpassed Paris as the artistic capital of the world. Examine the complex and varied nature of abstract painting and sculpture in the second half of the twentieth century.
Modern Masters from Smithsonian American Art Museum is on view from June 14 - September 6, 2009.
